The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change released the 18th India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2023.

The report is published every two years by the Forest Survey of India since 1987.

Key Findings of ISFR 2023

1. Forest and Tree Cover in India

2. Increase in Forest Cover

India’s total carbon stock now equals 30.43 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent.

7. Mangrove Cover

  • Total Mangrove Cover: 4,991.68 km²
  • Change since 2021: Decrease of 7.43 km²

Decrease:

  • Gujarat – −36.39 km²

Increase:

  • Andhra Pradesh – +13.01 km²
  • Maharashtra – +12.39 km²

8. Regional Performance

Western Ghats

The Western Ghats Eco-Sensitive Area:

  • Total area: 60,285 km²
  • Forest Cover: 73%

Northeast India

  • Forest & Tree Cover: 1,74,394.70 km²
  • Share of region’s area: 67%

9. Forest Fires (2023-24)

Top states reporting maximum fire incidents:

  1. Uttarakhand

10. Trend in Forestry Parameters (2013–2023)

Positive developments in the last decade:

  • Forest cover increased by 16,630 km²
  • Tree cover increased by 20,747 km²
  • Mangrove cover increased by 296 km²

Soil Health

  • Soil organic carbon increased from 55.85 t/ha → 56.08 t/ha
  • Shallow-to-deep soil improved from 83.53% → 87.16%

Biotic Disturbances

Reduced from 31.28% (2013) → 26.66% (2023)

International Commitments

Paris Agreement

Under the Paris Agreement, India aims to create an additional carbon sink of 2.5–3 billion tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2030.

Under the Bonn Challenge, India plans to restore 26 million hectares of degraded land by 2030.

Global Standing

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization Global Forest Resource Assessment (2020):

  • India is among the Top 10 countries in forest area.
  • 3rd highest annual net gain in forest cover (2010-2020).
