Temple Entry Movements sought to challenge the exclusion of lower castes and untouchable communities from Hindu temples and public spaces.

मंदिर प्रवेश आंदोलनों का उद्देश्य निम्न जातियों एवं अस्पृश्य माने जाने वाले समुदायों को मंदिरों तथा सार्वजनिक स्थानों से बाहर रखने की प्रथा को चुनौती देना था।

Reformers such as Sree Narayana Guru and N. Kumaran Asan had already contributed significantly to this cause.

Vaikom Satyagraha, 1924

English:
Vaikom in Travancore became an important centre of agitation. In 1924, the Vaikom Satyagraha was launched under the leadership of K.P. Kesava, demanding access to Hindu temples and roads for untouchable communities.

हिन्दी:
त्रावणकोर का वैकोम मंदिर प्रवेश आंदोलन का प्रमुख केंद्र बना। 1924 में के.पी. केशव के नेतृत्व में वैकोम सत्याग्रह शुरू हुआ, जिसमें अस्पृश्य माने जाने वाले समुदायों के लिए हिंदू मंदिरों तथा मंदिरों तक जाने वाली सड़कों को खोलने की मांग की गई।

The movement received support from processions or jathas from Punjab and Madurai, and Mahatma Gandhi also toured Kerala in support of the agitation.

इस आंदोलन को पंजाब और मदुरै से आए जत्थों का समर्थन मिला तथा महात्मा गांधी ने भी इसके समर्थन में केरल का दौरा किया।

Guruvayur Temple Movement | गुरुवायूर मंदिर आंदोलन

During the suspension of the Civil Disobedience Movement in 1931, the temple-entry campaign was again organised in Kerala.

K. Kelappan inspired the movement, while poet Subramaniyam Tirumambu, popularly known as the “Singing Sword of Kerala”, led sixteen volunteers towards Guruvayur.

A major breakthrough came on 12 November 1936, when the Maharaja of Travancore issued a proclamation opening all government-controlled temples to all Hindus.

3. Satyashodhak Samaj

Jyotiba Phule | ज्योतिबा फुले

Jyotiba Phule (1827–1890) was born in Satara, Maharashtra, and belonged to the Mali (gardener) community. He organised a powerful movement against upper-caste domination and Brahminical supremacy.

ज्योतिबा फुले (1827–1890) का जन्म महाराष्ट्र के सतारा में हुआ था और वे माली (माली/बागवान) समुदाय से संबंधित थे। उन्होंने उच्च जातीय वर्चस्व तथा ब्राह्मणवादी प्रभुत्व के विरुद्ध एक प्रभावशाली आंदोलन संगठित किया।

Formation | स्थापना

In 1873, Jyotiba Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth Seekers' Society).

1873 में ज्योतिबा फुले ने सत्यशोधक समाज (Truth Seekers' Society) की स्थापना की।

It drew leadership and support from backward communities such as Malis, Telis, Kunbis and Dhangars.

Women's Education | महिला शिक्षा

Jyotiba Phule was a strong advocate of gender equality. Along with his wife Savitribai Phule, he opened a girls' school in Poona.

He also supported widow remarriage and established a home for widows in 1854.

The SNDP movement emerged from the social conflict between depressed classes and upper castes in Kerala.

It was associated particularly with the Ezhava community, traditionally associated with toddy tapping and treated as an untouchable community at the time.
