PREPOSITIONS- General English

 

 PREPOSITION: Preposition placed before a noun or pronoun and shows the relationship between the Noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence.

E.G: He plays to by tickets

OBJECTS    OF    PREPOSITION:

Noun or pronoun which follows a particular preposition in a sentence-OBJECT

He prefer to travel by train object

PREPOSITION OF TIME

  1. AT is used: a) With  a definite point of time
  2. b)  With festivals

E.G                     1. I usually get up at 5 o’clock

  1. She leaves her house every day at 9 a.m
  2. He will come at Holi
  3. IN is used: a) with the parts of the day (with noon, used at), months, seasons and years.
  4. b) With the future tense referring to the period in which action may take place

 E.G                   1. He takes a walk in the afternoon

  1. In summer the weather is warm
  2. You must be careful in future
  3. ON is used with days and dates

  E.G                   1. My brother will arrive on Monday

  1. My birthday is on the first of June
  2. BY refers to the latest time at which an action will be over

    E.G                  The examination will be over by 5 p.m

  1. FOR is used with perfect continuous tense showing the duration of action

   E.G                                I have been here for three years

  1. SINCE is used with the point of time when action begins and continues:

E.G                          1. He has been ill since last Tuesday

  1. Since 1980, shalini has lived in Delhi
  1. 7. FROM refers to the starting point of action:

E.G                         1. This water came from a spring

  1. She came from USA
  1. BEFORE AND AFTER when something happened, happens or will happen in relation to other things

E.G                         1.  Before we discover this mall, we first withdraw some cash

  1. We will not leave before 2 a.m
  2. Priya came before Rahul and after Raman
  1. AROUND AND ABOUT to convey uncertainty/inaccurate or having errors of time

E.G                               1. The police arrive around 8 am

  1. I think they are talking about election
  1. DURING AND THROUGHOUT

E.G                                1. The contest will be held in three rounds throughout the month of Aril and May

  1. I learned how to drive a car during the holidays
  2. ON TIME, IN TIME, IN GOOD TIME

E.G                                1. The flight is on time (according to schedule, punctual)

  1. I just reached to examination hall as its start exam (before a time limit expires)
  2. She arrives at the airport in good time (in a reasonable time)

PREPOSITION OF POSTATION/PLACE

  1. AT refers  to an exact point:

E.G                       1. The tourist stayed at the Shimla Hotel.

  1. He studied at Oxford
  1. IN     refers to large areas:

E.G                       He lives in Bombay

  1. BETWEEN  is used for two persons or two things

E.G                       1. Share these sweets between him and me   

  1. It is a secret between you and me
  2. AMONG   is used with more than two persons or things (but before the word which starts with a consonant letter)

E.G                      Divide the sweets among the three boys.

  1. 5.  AMONGST is also used with more than two persons or thing (but before the word which starts with a vowel letter)

E.G                        Divide the sweets amongst us.

  1. BELOW is used for lower than:

E.G                            1. When the sun sets it goes below the horizon

  1. Your work is below average.
  1. ABOVE is used for higher than

E.G                             1. The sun rose above the horizon

  1. We were flying above the clouds.
  1. UNDER is used for vertically below

E.G                           It is shady under the trees

  1. OVER is used for vertically above

E.G                         1. There is an aircraft coming over

  1. The bathroom is over the kitchen
  1. BENEATH means a lower position

E.G                      The grounds was slippery beneath her

  1. ON used to relate to something with a surface

E.G                         1. The lights are hanging on the wall

  1. The books are on the table                              

   PREPOSITION OF DIRECTION

  1. TO  is used to express motion from one place to another

E.G                                  He walked to the river and back

  1. TOWARDS  refers to direction:

       E.G                         1. He saw me running towards him

  1. She glanced towards the mirror
  1. INTO denotes motion towards the inside of something

E.G                        He fell in to the well

  1. AT refers to aim

E.G                       He aimed at the bird

  1. FOR denotes direction

E.G                            1. I will leave for Pune today

                                  2 The Minister left for the U.K

  1. AGAINST shows pressure

E.G                        1. She leaned against a tree

  1. I am standing against the wall
  2. OFF refers to separation

E.G                        1. He was wiping sweat off his face

  1. Shallu fell off his chair in a swoon
  2. FROM refers to the point of departure:

E.G                       1. The man perfect from his friends      

      OTHER USES OF PREPOSITION

  1. ABOUT shows nearness

E.G                             1.His father is about to retire                     

ALONG stands for in the same line

E.G                            1. The current passes along the wire here

  1. AFTER  refers to sequence

E.G                             1. She came after me                    

  1. ACROSS means from one side

E.G                            1. She ran across the field

  1. BEFORE stands for in front of

       E.G                                      1. The garage is before the road

  1. BEHIND means at the back of

E.G                                   1. The sun went behind a cloud

  1. BEYOND means on the farther side of

E.G                                    Love is beyond all human control

  1. BESIDE means by the side of

E.G                                  I sat down beside my wife

  1. BESIDES means in addition to

E.G                                 He is guilty of five killings and more besides

  1. OF  used for belonging to, relating to, or connected with, number or amount

E.G                                 1. The first page of the book describes the poet struggle

  1. Don’t touch it .That’s the bag of my sister
  2. I drank three cups of milk
